The West Texas Region Disposal Facility (WTRDF)
There are two landfills in operation. One is designated as the Lubbock Landfill (Permit #69) located at 8425 North Avenue P and encompasses 318.7 acres with a total of 76 acres of landfill space. The second site is Lubbock's newest landfill. The West Texas Region Disposal Facility (Permit #2252) is located at 17304 North FM 2528 in Abernathy, Texas. The WTRDF is currently the largest landfill in the State of Texas with 1260 acres and is expected to serve the region for the next 100 years. Both landfills are open to the public.
WTRDF and the Lubbock Landfill are Type I landfills. They are governed by TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) regulations and accept environmentally safe waste. Type I designates that the landfills cannot accept hazardous waste.
Currently both landfills are in operation.
